# Parapharyngeal abscess
- lateral or pharynomaxillary space
- similar to [[Ludwig angina]] on presentation
- can cause airway obstruction and spread to contiguous areas
- risk of ==internal jugular vein thrombosis== and erosion of carotid artery
# Retropharyngeal abscess
- more common in children <5
- in adults, often from foreign bodies or trauma
