used to test for *autoimmune* [[haemolytic anaemia]]
**direct** Coombs test detects Abs that are stuck to the surface of the RBCs. used to test for autoimmune haemolytic anaemia.
**indirect** Coombs test detects Abs floating around in the blood against foreign blood cells. Used in prenatal testing of pregnant women and in testing prior to a blood transfusion.
> note: test is NEGATIVE for microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia
