progesteron only emergency contraception (POEC)
dose: **levonorgestrel 0.75mg** po q12H x2 or 1.5mg STAT within 120h of sexual intercourse (ideally <72H)
1.1% failure rate if given <72H; prevents 85% of anticipated pregnancies
much fewer side effects than Yuzpe method (not described here)
**adverse effects**
- nausea
- vomiting
- dizziness
- fatigue
alternatives:
- mifepristone single 50mg oral dose
- more effective
- expensive
- withdrawl bleed occurs after a few days
- next period delayed
- intrauterine contraceptive device
- insertion of IUCD within 5 days is most effective (prevents 99.9% of pregnancies
- no direct trials comparing hormonal regimens
