# Newborn life support algorithm
![[Pasted image 20230824214125.png]]
# Initial neopuff settings
- Gas flow at 10L/min
- max pressure relief valve 50cm H2O
- PIP
- 30cm H2O term
- 20-25cm H2O <32 weeks
- [PEEP](x-devonthink-item://D9DC5866-8F3C-4DDA-9E15-AAB7174F2917?page=10&start=878&length=4&search=PEEP) - 5 cm H2O
# Differences from APLS
- initial ventilatory support in neonates is with room air and without supplemental O2, using PEEP
- chest compressions are commenced if HR is 60 BPM or below; do not wait until no signs of life or unresponsive
- warm environment is an important consideration; relative surface area makes bub prone to hypothermia
- positive pressure ventilation in neonatal resus requires that the first breaths be slow to overcome collapsed lung due to lack of surfactant
- vascular access achieved via umbilical vein catheter
